How To Choose A PAD Clinical Trial

Choosing a Clinical Trial Should Feel Informed
— Not Overwhelming

Exploring clinical trials can open doors to new options. But it’s also okay to have questions, hesitation, or uncertainty.

This page is here to help you understand what to look for, what to expect, and how to decide what feels right for you — alongside your care team.

Is a Clinical Trial Right for You?

A clinical trial is one possible path
— not the only one.

Some people explore trials because:

they want access to new or emerging treatments

they’ve been told their options are limited

they’re looking for alternatives before considering more invasive procedures

they just want to be aware of new, emerging PAD treatments...just in case they ever need additional options

There’s no pressure to move forward. Learning about a trial does not mean you have to participate.

👉 The most important thing:
You and your doctor decide together what makes sense for your situation.

You may go through:

Every clinical trial is different, but most follow a similar process.

What Participation Actually Looks Like

Depending on the study design.  Check your calendar for available to ensure you can complete the study. A lot goes into these trials and they need participants who are committed as researchers are in the process.

Regular visits or check-ins

So you can understand what’s known — and what’s still being studied. Please pay close attention to these and weigh them for yourself. Go over them with your own care team.

A review of risks and benefits

To see if the study is a good fit based on your medical history and current condition

Initial Screening

Ongoing Monitoring

To track your progress and ensure your safety. Make sure you have discussed with the research team how you prefer to be contacted. If you have call screening, ensure the appropriate contact numbers are logged into your phone so that you can be reached when appropriate.

👉 The key is understanding what participation would look like for you before making a decision.

Some trials are more involved than others. Some require travel. Others may be closer to home.

Questions to Ask Before You Decide

It’s okay to ask detailed questions.
In fact, you should.

Here are a few to start with:

What is the goal of this study?

What are the potential risks and benefits for me?

If I don't participate, what other treatment options do I have?

What will participation require from me day-to-day?

Can I leave the study at any time?

How will this affect my current care or medications?

Who is overseeing the study and where is it being conducted?

How will the information collected from my participation be used?

If you need help preparing additional questions:
